NUD*IST
(Non-numerical Unstructured Data * Indexing Searching and Theorizing)
is a simple and useful tool for handling unstructured data such as qualitative
data collected in interviews. This workshop introduces the general features
and operations of NUD*IST, the idea of indexing, and how to use this software
to support theory building in teaching and learning research. Simple hands-on
exercise will also be given in the workshop. 14

Regression
is a common method to study the relationship between a dependent variable
and one or more independent variables. The workshop introduces to participants
the basic concepts of regression using practical examples. Emphasis is
placed on the use of statistical programmes, SPSS and the analysis of
outputs. 18
February 2003
The workshop is a non-mathematical introduction to factor analysis, a commonly used method to represent a set of variables by a smaller number of hypothetical variables called "Factors". Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis are included in the presentation. Discussion focuses on the rationale and practical issues of factor analysis. 24

This
workshop will introduce the usage of two statistical methods, t-test and
ANOVA, for group comparison. These two methods are particularly useful
for experimental designs. In this workshop, we will look at examples in
published articles and focus on the applications of these two statistical
methods in solving applied problems in education, especially those in
classrooms. In addition, use of the statistical package SPSS will also
be introduced. 17
December 2002
This workshop examines common types of experimental designs for education research. It focuses on developing competence in identifying and designing experiments to answer a range of research questions in education. At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to: (a) develop an appreciation of the principles underpinning some commonly used experimental designs; (b) be able to determine whether experimental designs are suitable for answering their research question; and (c) be able to select experimental designs that best answer their research question. 16

EndNote
is a piece of software for researchers to manage references. It helps
researchers to maintain his/her own reference library and to build up
citations and bibliographies for reports and papers. The workshop will
introduce the general features of EndNote and will provide hands-on exercises
on how to manage reference library using EndNote and how to use it to
generate different styles of citations and bibliographies. 5
November 2002
This workshop examines common survey research design and related analysis issues. It gives a broad overview on major aspects of survey process, including types of survey research methods, sampling, data collection formats and validity issues. This workshop is particularly designed for education researchers and school practitioners who are interested in undertaking survey research for teaching and learning. 17

To improve the quality of teaching and learning, it is necessary for us to learn about opinions and comments from students and relevant stakeholders regarding the contents and structure of the programmes. Information obtained from survey research study for students and relevant stakeholders will thus serve as a guide to further teaching improvement and programme development work. This workshop targets at practitioners who would like to use statistics for data analysis and reporting of survey research results. It introduces basic approaches to data description and presentation. Examples on published studies will be used for discussion and demonstration. In addition, the SPSS statistical software will be introduced to illustrate how to input the survey data and how to generate descriptive statistics and graphs for reports. 30
April 2002
This workshop is outcome oriented. It is designed to provide practical experience in undertaking multilevel analysis of data (simulated data) with hierarchy in structure using the computer software MLn. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own data set for analysis and subsequent publications. (Please refer to the Appendix on next page for the data format) Topics will cover (1) Setting up data for multilevel analysis; (2) Variance-component models; and (3) Random slope model for school effectiveness studies. 10
April 2002
This workshop examines common types of single-subject designs for education research. It focuses on developing competence in identifying and designing single-subject experiments to answer a range of research questions in education. This workshop is designed for teachers and educational researchers who are interested in undertaking single-subject research for educators and teachers. The topics will cover: (1) What are single-subject designs, (2) Types of single-subject designs, as well as (3) Analysis and validity issues in single-subject designs. 8

Today's information technology provides a rich array of authoring, design, and sever software used to create the most engaging, interactive, learning applications. Since 1997 the Government established its first IT policy and a five-year IT in Education strategy. The hardware, software and networking infrastructure provisions in schools have been greatly improved. However, in a recent preliminary study of ITED initiatives, there has not been a paradigm shift in teaching and learning as advocated in the five-year strategy. The most popular teaching activities in schools are those using IT as an expository tool such as PowerPoint. With the overwhelming use of PowerPoint in schools, presentation software is almost a substitute for all the other instructional software. This workshop will give a review on educational multimedia courseware and identify major learning elements used for learning purposes in instructional software. After this workshop, participants are expected to have an understanding on what multimedia learning software should be in order to promote the shift from teaching to learning.

To improve the quality of teaching and learning, it is necessary for academic staff to obtain information from students/relevant stakeholders on whether and how the programmes have benefited our students/graduates. The information so obtained will serve as a guide to further teaching improvement and programme development work. This workshop targets practitioners who would like to use statistics for data analysis and reporting of survey research results. It introduces basic approaches to data presentation and description of different types of data. Discussion will be illustrated by applying different types of presentation methods to graduate research. Examples on published studies will be used for discussion and demonstration. In addition, the SPSS statistical software will be introduced to illustrate how to generate descriptive statistics for reports. 30

Quality
assurance and school monitoring is a key education reform issue of many
countries around the world. In Hong Kong, a QA framework has been established,
making use of Performance Indicators in four major domains, namely, Management
and Organisation; Teaching and Learning; Support for Pupils and School
Ethos; and Attainment and Achievement. This seminar aims to develop an
understanding of Performance Indicators; including quality criteria for
Performance Indicators, the methods of constructing, validating and norming
Performance Indicators for the monitoring of schooling outcomes. Performance
Indicators used in other education systems will also be discussed at the
seminar.
