Leadership for the New Millennium Education Lecture
Series:
Lecture delivered by Mr Moses Cheng Mo-chi, Chairman of the Board of Education
The Asia-Pacific Centre for Education Leadership and
School Quality organised a keynote lecture of the "Leadership
for the New Millennium Education Lecture Series" on 9 May 2000.
The Centre had great pleasure to invite Mr Moses Cheng Mo-chi, OBE, JP,
Chairman of the Board of Education to be the keynote speaker.
In his lecture, Mr Cheng shared with us his insightful
thoughts and ideas on the challenges we face in achieving total commitment
of the society, the strategies that front-line education practitioners
should adopt in order to cope with rapid changes brought about by the
education reforms as well as the ways to promote education reforms as
a whole.
The thought-inspiring lecture was well received by different
stake-holders in education, including policy-makers, school principals,
scholars, researchers and students.

Lectures Delivered by Professor Elliot Eisner, Professor
of Education and Art at Stanford University
a) "The Educational Value of the Arts",
6 December 1999
The Asia-Pacific Centre for Education Leadership and
School Quality, in conjunction with the Advisory Inspectorate Division
and the Curriculum Development Institute of the Education Department,
the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the School of Creative Arts,
Sciences and Technology, organised a public lecture on "The Educational
Value of the Arts" on 6 December 1999. Professor Elliot Eisner,
one of the world's most renowned scholars in art education and curriculum
studies, was the keynote speaker. Professor Stuart Richmond, Dean of
the School of Creative Arts, Sciences and Technology, served as Chairman
of the lecture.
In the lecture, Professor Eisner shared with our colleagues
his invaluable insights and thoughts on arts education and the most
important kinds of thinking skills that the arts promote in the recent
decades.
The lecture attracted 300 participants including education
leaders, school principals, scholars, researchers and students. They
were all inspired by Professor Eisner's views and ideas. Some of the
participants also attended the other lectures conducted by Professor
Eisner on the morning and afternoon of 7 December 1999.
b) "Creating Schools that Educate", 7
December 1999
The Centre organised on 7 December 1999 another lecture
by Professor Eisner, "Creating Schools that Educate", in conjunction
with the Hong Kong Subsidised Secondary Schools Council, the Hong Kong
Subsidised Primary Schools Council, the Education Department, the School
of Foundations in Education and the School of Early Childhood Education.
Dr P K Chan, Head of the Department of Educational Studies, was invited
to chair the lecture.
With his extensive experience in education, Professor
Eisner discussed in the lecture the conditions that schools should pay
particular attention to for desirable educative outcomes.
The lecture was an extremely pertinent activity for
all educators in pursuit of educational excellence. It enjoyed active
participation from different stake-holders in education, including policy-makers,
practitioners, researchers and students.
c) "What Have We Learned During the Past Millennium
in Education to Guide Us in the Next?", 7 December 1999.
Another opportunity to share the views and experiences
of Professor Eisner came with the public lecture, "What Have We
Learned During the Past Millennium in Education to Guide Us in the Next",
which was conducted in the afternoon on 7 December 1999. The Centre
organised this lecture with the assistance of the Hong Kong Subsidised
Primary Schools Council, the Hong Kong Subsidised Secondary Schools
Council, the Education Department, the School of Foundations in Education
and the School of Early Childhood Education. Professor Raymond Anderson,
Associate Director (Academic Services), was invited to chair the lecture.
Professor Eisner identified the lessons of the past
fifty years concerning the improvement of educational practice and the
reforms that are useful in making plans for schooling in the coming
fifty years. He also unveiled his thoughts on a wide range of issues
involving teaching, learning, curriculum, and the sources of educational
change.
The lecture was well received, with very positive feedback
from participants including policy-makers, school principals, scholars,
researchers and students.

Leadership for the New Millennium Education Lecture
Series:
Lecture delivered by Mr Irving Koo Yee Yin, JP, Chairman of the Quality
Education Fund Steering Committee
The Asia-Pacific Centre for Education Leadership and
School Quality organised a keynote lecture of the "Leadership
for the New Millennium Education Lecture Series" on 18 November
1999. This time, Mr Irving Koo Yee Yin, JP, Chairman of the Quality Education
Fund Steering Committee and one of the most prominent leaders of Hong
Kong, was invited to be our keynote speaker.
At the lecture, Mr Koo shared with the audience his invaluable
insights and thoughts on the close relationship between the work of the
Quality Education Fund (QEF) and the recent educational review conducted
by the Education Commission. He also unveiled his thoughts on the plans
and strategies of the QEF in realising the concept of student-focused
and life-wide learning - the most important principle of reforms proposed
by the Education Commission.
The lecture attracted different stake-holders in education,
including policy-makers, school principals, scholars, researchers and
students. They were all inspired by Mr Koo's lecture, which according
to some participants had enhanced their understanding of the role and
strategies of the QEF, and provided them with further ideas and insights
for submitting QEF proposals in future.

Ceremonies and Lecture by Mrs Anson Chan, Former
Chief Secretary for Administration of the Government of the Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region
With the support of the Asia-Pacific Centre for Education
Leadership and School Quality, the ceremonies for the "Leadership
for the New Millennium" Education Lecture Series and the Hong
Kong School Leadership Development Network were successfully held
on 22 September 1999. The ceremonies were officiated by the Honourable
Mrs Anson Chan, former Chief Secretary for Administration of the Government
of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
After the ceremonies, Mrs Chan delivered a lecture outlining
the Government's intention to create an environment which can "empower"
teachers and, in turn, students. She also discussed what educators, particularly
teachers and principals, could achieve in this "empowered" role.
Over 800 participants including education leaders, school
principals, students and our colleagues attended the ceremonies and the
lecture.

Series: Lecture by Mrs Fanny Law, Secretary for Education and Manpower
Bureau (Former Director of Education Department)
The Asia-Pacific Centre for Education Leadership and
School Quality organised a keynote lecture of the "Leadership
for the New Millennium Education Lecture Series" on 26 May 1999.
Mrs Fanny Law, former Director of Education, delivered a keynote lecture
on "Quality Education in the New Century: Challenges to Teacher Development"
on 26 May 1999. She shared her thoughts on how the government and the
education sector could work together in meeting the challenges for education
development. During the lecture, there were also discussions on the roles
of teachers and the significance of teacher development in the pursuit
of quality education.
