T
eaching and Learning Arrangement after Resumption of Classes (14 April 2003)

FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF

(I) Graduating classes whose block practice/teaching practice has been interrupted, including FT PGDE(P), FT PGDE(S), CE(ECE), CE(P), CE(S), ACTE and QKT

The period of block practice/teaching practice will be extended for two weeks for all named programmes except that of ACTE which will be changed from 31 March ¡V 17 May 2003 to 22 April ¡V 24 May 2003.

Students should resume block practice/teaching practice following the resumption schedules of the placement schools, that is on 22 April 2003 or on a date as advised by the school or the Education and Manpower Bureau. Students should ignore the Institute¡¦s Easter break and follow the placement schools¡¦ schedules. Similarly, staff members are expected to conduct FE supervision even though some may fall within the Institute¡¦s Easter break.

If students cannot gain continued access to their placement schools, the respective FE coordinators will be responsible to make alternative arrangements on the principle that no students will be disadvantaged unduly.

The deadlines for submission of assignments, the end of semester 2 and the start of the revision/examination period will be correspondingly deferred for two weeks (one week for ACTE).

  (II) Non-graduating classes of pre-service programmes whose block practice/teaching practice has been interrupted, including Yrs 2 & 3 of 4-Yr BEd(P)/4-Yr BEd(S), Yr 2 of CE(ECE), and 2PC1, 3PC2, 2SC1 and 3SC2

If students¡¦ block practice/teaching practice counts towards award classification, they will be given a pending grade. Attempts will be made to arrange make-up block practice and related supervision in the following year.

If students¡¦ block practice/teaching practice does not count towards award classification, there will not be any arrangements to make-up for the loss in block practice/teaching practice. However, for those students without any supervision visits yet for the entire block practice, their Field Experience Coordinators will make alternative arrangements, e.g. micro-teaching for students to demonstrate their ability.

The teaching schedules, other remaining programme activities and the revision/examination period will remain unchanged since these students have only missed some block practice/teaching practice but no Institute classes.

(III) Classes of mixed mode programmes whose block practice/teaching practice has been interrupted

The block practice/teaching practice of those mixed mode programmes which finishes before end of May will be extended to the end of May 2003.

The deadlines for submission of assignments, the end of semester 2 and the start of the revision/examination period will be correspondingly deferred for one week.

(IV) Classes of programmes that have missed Institute classes only, including

  (a) graduating classes of 4-Yr BEd(P) and Add-on BEd(P);
  (b) classes of part-time/mixed mode programmes; and
  (c) non-graduating classes of pre-service programmes, including Yr 1 of 4-Yr BEd(P)/ 4-Yr BEd(S)/Add-on BEd(P)/CE(ECE), and Yrs 1 & 2 of BEd(L).

The loss of teaching weeks in the Institute (i.e. 29 March ¡V 13 April 2003) will be made up by an extension of semester 2 for one week plus individual independent studies.

The deadlines for submission of assignments and the start of the revision/examination period will be correspondingly deferred for one week (for Yr 1 of 4-Yr BEd(P) the revision/examination period will remain unchanged).

(V) Classes of all 16-week in-service language courses

The end of programmes will remain unchanged, in view of the fact that the end date affects the language immersion programmes following it and the sponsoring schools¡¦ appointment of supply teachers. The loss of teaching weeks in the Institute will be made up by appropriate means such as individual independent studies, or lengthened teaching hours.

(VI) Classes of 5-week full-time block release course

The end of the course will remain unchanged, in view of the fact that the end date affects the sponsoring schools¡¦ appointment of supply teachers. The loss of teaching weeks in the Institute will be made up during the Easter break of the Institute i.e. 22-26 April 2003.

(VII) General points applicable to all programmes

In general the Institute Easter break will be maintained except for those classes that are undergoing block practice/teaching practice in accordance with the schedules of the placement schools. However, Programme Teams will have the discretion to adjust the Easter break to suit the programme requirements.

The Programme Teams will revise the schedules for the programme activities following the guidelines outlined above and consult the Deans (of the programme) for any variations. The revised schedules will be announced to staff and students as soon as possible.

The Module Lecturers will revise the deadlines for submission of assignments following the guidelines outlined above. If they feel that the suspension of block practice/teaching practice/Institute classes have no impact on the assignments they can keep the original deadlines consulting the Head of Department or the Programme Team as appropriate. In all cases the Module Lecturers should inform the students if the deadlines have been changed or otherwise.

Students should make their own rational judgment regarding their state of health and report to the Field Experience Coordinators of the respective Schools/Programmes, whenever they have cause for concerns.

In the period between 14- 22 April 2003, students who are on block practice/teaching practice but awaiting placement schools to re-open, are expected to prepare for their field experience and follow the specific requirements/announcements of their respective Programmes.

Students whose attachment activities have been interrupted should follow the announcements of individual Programmes regarding make-up arrangements.

Changes in field experience (block practice/teaching practice) arrangements will be communicated by the respective Programme Teams to their placement schools.

The revision/examination period of some programmes may be shortened in order to minimize any delay in the dates of Boards of Examiners (BOE) meetings that will endorse assessment results and graduation status. The timetables for examinations that are administered centrally are being revised and so are the schedules for grade submission/release of provisional assessment results/BOE meeting dates. The finalized timetables and schedules will be announced in due course.

The Registry will follow its standing practice to issue a ¡§Statement of Results¡¨ to each graduating student as soon as students¡¦ assessment results are confirmed by the BOEs to facilitate their employment applications.
