Programme Aims

This Programme is the first add-on specialist degree in Hong Kong on special needs and inclusive education. The Programme, in line with the government's policy on integration, aims to provide specialist training for serving teachers or professionals to work effectively with students with special needs in mainstream schools or special education settings. It also aims to significantly enhance the competencies of teachers so that they are able to collaborate and develop effective teams within the realm of the whole school approach whether they are based in special education settings or resource centres.


 
Programme Features

Professional Upgrading
  • The programme raises participants' professional standards in special needs and inclusive education.

Autonomy of Study and Flexible Programme Duration
  • Participants may undertake elective courses according to their professional needs or interests and base on them to complete their Education Project.
  • Participants may complete the programme within 5 years.

Interactive Learning Mode
  • Participants will be encouraged to reflect and build on their practical experience in catering for special needs children through communication and coordination with other participants in a stimulating teaching and learning environment.
 


 
Programme Structure

This is a 3-year part-time in-service programme consisting of 60* credit points (cps). The programme is structured around 5 domains as follows:

Education Studies
This domain aims to broaden participants' educational value, interests and skills in removing barriers to learning and educating the whole child. It helps participants develop new problem-solving strategies that are responsive to different learning needs of different classroom learners through a self-critical process. The courses are:
  • Perspectives in Special Education
  • Human Development
  • Developmental Challenges
  • School Guidance and Counselling
  • Whole School Approaches to Inclusive Practices
  • School-Family-Community Partnership

Specialised Studies
This domain comprises 2 study areas:

Specialised Studies I (Students with Learning Needs)
These courses are designed to meet the training needs of participants in addressing the challenges of teaching and learning in inclusive education settings or special schools. This area adopts a functional approach to reviewing the needs of students in the following 3 functional areas:
  • Emotional and Behavioral Challenges
  • Different Cognitive and Perceptual Abilities
  • Language, Physical and Sensory Difficulties

Participants are required to study a total of 5 courses from one focused functional area or across different areas depending on their needs and interests.

Specialised Studies II (Curriculum Development and Inclusive Teaching)
This area is designed to prepare participants for effective teaching in classrooms by sensitively responding to different individual and diverse needs. It enhances participants' understanding of the students' learning difficulties and equips them with value diversified pedagogies.

Participants are required to study a total of 4 courses, starting with a compulsory course "Curriculum and Assessment for Inclusive Education" to equip them with the basic principles of curriculum and assessment differentiation, particularly, but not exclusively, in inclusive settings. They can then choose to study 3 more courses in different subject areas depending on their needs and professional interests. The courses are:

  • Children's Development of Language Ability in Chinese
  • Chinese Learning Strategies for Special Needs Students
  • New Trends of Teaching Chinese for Special Needs Students

Mathematics
  • Development of Mathematical Concepts and Skills
  • Teaching Mathematics to Students with Special Needs
  • Using Technology for Inclusive Teaching in Mathematics

Music
  • The Development of Musical Art
  • Strategies for Teaching Music to Students with Special Needs
  • Music Activity and Creativity Workshop

Physical Education
  • Motor Development of Children with Special Needs
  • Teaching Physical Education to Students with Special Needs
  • Adapted Sports and Activities for Students with Disabilities

Visual Arts
  • Child Development: Aesthetic and Creative Growth
  • Visual Arts for Special Needs: Issues, Planning & Strategies
  • New Trends in Visual Arts: Meeting Students' Diversity

Complementary Studies
This domain is designed to broaden participants' knowledge horizons in different areas. Participants are required to select one** course from the varied choices on offer in different areas: Information Technology, General Studies and Specialised Studies.
**Participants without initial teacher training are required to take two additional courses (9 credit points in total for CS Domain).

Education Project
This domain allows participants to pursue a relevant study of classroom practice in their own setting. Topics for the Project will emerge from participants' studies in Education Studies and Specialised Studies courses based on personal and professional interests. Participants will be supported by programme lecturers with expertise in their project topics chosen.

Field Experience
The Field Experience plays a crucial role in the programme, consisting of 3 components: Collaborative Seminars, Teaching Practicum, and Field Experience Reports. Participants will be provided with opportunities to apply and test theories learnt in the programme, and share and report on small groups collaborative teaching activities. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit special education facilities and inclusive settings in other countries on a self-funded basis.
 


 
Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese. English is adopted as the language of instruction for relevant lectures and/or courses, as appropriate.
 


 
Entrance Requirements

The programme is open to serving teachers holding a Certificate in Education or a Certificate of the Teachers of Children with Special Educational Needs (TCSEN) or equivalent.

Applicants without the above qualifications but possess other post-secondary qualification and with experience in teaching or working with students with learning difficulties or special needs can also apply.
 


 
Admission Interviews

Applicants may be required to attend admission interviews to demonstrate their suitability for the programme.
 


 
Field Experience Requirements

Participants without a teaching post are required to make themselves available for the block teaching practice (normally 6 weeks of full-time block teaching practice in Semester 2 of Year 2 and Year 3 of the programme). The Institute will provide assistance to participants in the arrangement of the Field Experience when necessary.
