Programme Aims

This programme is designed for teaching staff in tertiary education institutions, especially teachers of Associate Degree and sub-degree professional and vocational education programmes, and teachers of applied learning courses. It aims to enable participants to develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required for effective teaching and learning of professional and vocational education (PVE). It will also equip participants for continuous development as committed educators and change agents in their area of teaching.

Graduates of the programme are expected to:
  • apply and adapt key concepts and theories of education and learning within the contexts of PVE;
  • work effectively within their own contexts by understanding, evaluating and interpreting the contexts of PVE from multiple perspectives;
  • design and implement learning environments that are learner-centered and adopt a learning-by-doing strategy oriented to lifelong learning;
  • develop and implement online teaching strategies to support student learning;
  • develop and apply a range of formative and summative assessment strategies to facilitate students' learning and to ensure that students meet the required standards; and
  • continue to learn within rapidly changing educational environments through the skills of inquiry, application and reflection.

Programme Structure

This is a two-year part-time programme comprising 30 credit points (cps). The programme consists of a programme orientation and the following components:

Programme Orientation

All participants must attend a programme orientation which includes information sessions about the curriculum, campus facilities and services.

General Methods and Education Studies

General Methods and Education Studies provide participants with a substantial grounding in the principles and practices of teaching and assessment relevant to the education of young adults in the professional and vocational education (PVE) context. These include a broad understanding of human development and the learning process, theories of adolescent and adult learning, approaches to teaching strategies, instructional design and assessment, developing learning resources, and contemporary issues in the whole field of PVE. Elective Studies

Elective Studies component offers participants with the extended studies that may be curriculum related or professional development oriented. Participants are required to choose two out of the following courses according to their own professional needs and/or interests. A list of Elective Studies courses offered in the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) Programme (PGDE(S)) and Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Professional & Vocational Education) Programme (BEd(PVE)) will also be provided for participants' selection, as appropriate.

Field Experience

Field Experience component, as a platform for further professional development, builds on participants' teaching experience and knowledge of their work settings. Participants are expected to use relevant professional and vocational education practice to demonstrate the integration of skills and knowledge from other courses and their competence as teachers. Consistent with the Institute's practice in field experience, participants will be visited and provided with feedback on their work by their Institute Supervisors and colleagues in the workplace. The courses are:

  • Workplace Learning Project I
  • Workplace Learning Project II

Mode of Delivery

The Programme is delivered through face-to-face teaching, non-face-to-face (online and/or supervised) study and independent learning. The ratio of face-to-face teaching to non-face-to-face study is normally 6:4. Each 3-cp course includes 21-24 hours of face-to-face teaching, 15-18 hours of non-face-to-face study, and 78 additional hours of other independent learning, making 117 hours of total student effort. Classes are normally held in weekday evenings and/or on Saturdays, while other arrangements will be made when necessary. Please note that courses of the programme will be conducted on Tai Po Campus/ Tseung Kwan O Study Centre#/ satellite study centres at urban locations and/or Sports Centre as decided by the Institute.

Methods of Teaching and Learning

A variety of teaching approaches, such as lectures, case studies, discussions, presentations, experiential activities, problem-solving activities and directed study, will be adopted. All teaching and learning activities emphasise inquiry, application and reflection.

Assessments

A range of assessment strategies will be used throughout the courses to facilitate and monitor participants' professional development. These strategies include: case studies, field studies, online discussions, instructional planning, projects, review reports and presentations. All assessments are criterion referenced.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese. English is adopted as the language of instruction for relevant courses, as appropriate.

Block Credit Transfer

The programme recognises participants' prior learning and grants block credit transfer on an individual basis. Block credit transfer may be granted up to 50% of the total credit requirements for award. Block credit transfer will be granted to VTC teaching staff who has completed the following VTC Training Programme(s):

  1. "Introduction to Teaching at VTC (INT)" completed in or before May 2006 – a block credit transfer of one of the two Elective Studies courses;
  2. "Key Skills Programme (KS)" – a block credit transfer of Independent Project course on a condition of completing an additional work on the project related to key skills;
  3. "An In-service Education and Training Programme for IVE Teachers (INSET)" – a block credit transfer of two equivalent courses, "Strategies for Teaching & Learning in PVE", and "Enhancing Participation and Engagement in Learning".

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should normally:
  1. hold a recognised Bachelor's degree, or equivalent; and
  2. hold a teaching post in a local university, post-secondary institution or secondary school.

Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview.
