Programme Aims
This programme is designed for untrained early childhood graduate teachers. It aims to develop participants' professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required for effective teaching and administration in a broad range of early childhood education settings. |

Programme Features
- Focuses on nurturing participants' professional knowledge, skills and attitudes for incorporation into teaching practice, enabling them to gradually develop into competent early childhood educators and administrators in ECE settings.
- Fosters participants' ability to promote integration of theory and practice and to critically translate programme content into workplace practice.

Programme Structure
This is a two-year part-time programme comprising 38 credit points (cps). Participants are normally required to attend two 3-hour classes per week. Classes are normally held on weekday evening(s) and/or Saturday at Town Centre#/ satellite study centres at urban locations/ Sports Centre and/or Tai Po Campus as decided by the Institute. This programme comprises a programme orientation and the following components:

Programme Orientation
All participants must attend a programme orientation which includes information sessions about the curriculum, campus facilities and services, as well as an IT workshop. |

Teaching Subject Studies
The Teaching Subject Studies courses help participants acquire the necessary understanding and expertise for promoting young children's holistic development and learning in all domains. This component includes the study of the theory and practice of integrated curriculum as well as the contemporary pedagogical approaches for early childhood education. The courses are:
- Enhancing Children's Creativity and Self-expression
- Promoting Children's Health and Well-being
- Promoting Language & Literacy in Early Childhood
- Scientific & Mathematical Explorations for Young Children

Education Studies
The Education Studies courses provide participants with an understanding of the elements of educational foundation disciplines, including children's development, learning process and the contexts of development and education. The courses are:
- Human Development
- Learning and Teaching
- The Professional Teacher
- School-Family-Community Partnerships
- Understanding and Managing Diversity
- Preschool Educational and Professional Management

Field Experience
The Field Experience course comprises the following three main components:
- Educational Visits
Participants will have the opportunity to visit nursery schools, crèches and other educational settings.
- Reflective Teaching Journal
This component includes analysis of participants' own conception of teaching, reflective records of try-outs of teaching strategies and approaches introduced in various courses.
- Block Teaching Practice
Participants can try out what they have learnt in the Teaching Subject Studies and Education Studies courses, as well as devising ways to test their teaching effectiveness.

Medium of Instruction
Two streams of studies are offered. Participants are required to choose either Chinese or English as the main medium of instruction.
Chinese as the medium of instruction [Code: CMI]
The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese. English or Putonghua is adopted as the language of instruction for relevant courses, as appropriate.
English as the medium of instruction [Code: EMI]
The medium of instruction is mainly English. |

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications
Graduates of this programme will:
- acquire the Certificate in Early Childhood Education equivalency;
- be eligible to register as Qualified Kindergarten Teachers and Registered Child Care Workers;
- meet the professional qualifications as head of kindergarten and child care supervisor; and
- be eligible to apply for the Institute's Master of Education Programme.

Entrance Requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants should normally:
- hold a recognised Bachelor's degree, or equivalent; and
- be serving teachers in early childhood education settings. (Please submit the completed recommendation form <Download Recommendation Form> with your application.)
Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview. |
